Shirley Feeney is the owner and proprietor of the iconic and glamourous Shirley’s Beauty Clinic in Glanmire. Inspiring found a moment to have a chat with Shirley about everything business and beauty!
What attracted you to the industry?
I have been going to beauty salons since my teens and loved to be treated and pampered and de-fuzzed, so I guess I’ve always had a passion for becoming a beauty therapist. Doing massage, facials and waxing, what a treat!
God only knows how! I didn’t think I would last the year, when I first opened up, as in the beginning I would only have maybe one client every few days and it was like that for a while and then I suppose you persevere and eventually you start to build a clientele. Hard work, dedication and help from people who you love. I guess I still love what I do, which it’s an honour to say this and I still love working in the beauty industry and upskilling and retraining all the time; that’s the key. Also ,to have a great team behind me, supporting and loving what we do.
I opened upstairs in 1999 and a week later found out I was expecting my first child. I went 10 days over my due date and worked right up to the day I went in to have my son. It was tough but it had to be done. I couldn’t afford to hire someone to cover my leave, so I had to return to work two weeks after his birth. Thank God, I had great help from my parents. If I didn’t have them there to help me I don’t think I would have been able to commit so much to the business. Then in 2002 we moved downstairs and the business began to grow and grow!
Making people look and feel good about themselves; such a great feeling!
What’s the most difficult part of what you do?
The behind-the-scenes part of the business. So many hours need to be put in to any business for it be run successfully.
What’s the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?
To be yourself, be natural, and have fun. Make the most of you.
What’s the best piece of style advice you can pass on?
“Be your own kind of beautiful.”
Who is your business icon and why?
I do admire women in business. The personal struggles that a woman faces in any high position in any company, these women I admire most and look up to. Most of these women belong to Network Ireland Cork. It organises monthly events for members and guests, which help inform, educate, motivate and support each member, both personally and in their businesses. It also provides a forum for established women to develop professional contacts.
For my girls and myself to retrain in every area of the beauty industry with the new and up and coming, whether it be products or treatments, the key to staying motivated is to upskill at every opportunity and enjoy each experience that it brings.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I never look that far ahead. I am grateful for every day. Let’s enjoy today and think about tomorrow when it comes!
What advice would you give young people who want to break into the industry?
Have a solid business plan with a view to long-term success. You also need a good support network, as the first few years of any new business can be tough. I would also recommend if you’re going into business with someone else, choose your partner carefully and be sure to surround yourself with a good team. Know what your strengths are and play up to them and above all, have passion for what you do!
My favorite part of the job is to give the best possible treatments with a smile, and to make someone feel special and feel good about themselves afterwards.
Probably our most up-to-date treatments. We are constantly introducing the most innovative and up-to-date treatments always. Also, we strive to offer the friendliest service. I am in business coming up to my twentieth year this September. So much has changed over the years. The technology is second to none. We now offer clients more than just waxing and facials. We can now offer clients skin treatments on a deeper level that was only always available to dermatologists. Since April 2017, we have invested in the Nordlys System; it’s one of the best platforms on the market and it can treat over 24 skin concerns, such as acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, lesions, rosacea, lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, the treatment and removal of warts, verrucae, and nail fungal and so much more.
My staff are the backbone of my business. They also love what they do and have extreme passion for the beauty industry and love to upskill. We have a great connection with our clients, whom we love and appreciate for all the loyalty that they give to us.
